what do you do every summer watch TV go swimming lay around relaxing or going to summer job will there other options in which you can make an impact in the global Community while changing the out if your summer classmates if you are spent a week or more making the best memories of their lives in other countries or in classes doing community service learning new skills using a different language and maybe something a different Coastline the experience but you can value two are definitely worth it now you have the chance to hear what kinds of things you could do this summer or where you could make a difference to Stephanie McNamara I'm in 11th grade and I take both Spanish and French this summer I spent a month in Spain for the Rotary International family and insurance which would need to be paid and any circumstances the application is pretty lengthy and can be found online at rotary.com includes a long application and interview with rotary club members and background checks for when you host siblings come to stay with you and your family after you complete the East your application will be the first country of your choosing and there's a compatible student there someone else comparable age you will get their application you can then review the application and decide if you want to proceed with that student or to another department in the city of Madrid all the famous landmarks and buildings. The city we also went to the beach for a few days for life I try new foods I got to experience City and of course I learned so many new words and expressions I've been taking Spanish since freshman year and that has really added me my mission trip this past summer I travel to Merida Mexico on the peninsula Cornerstone Ministries through the program Mission differently has Mission experiences in various locations spanning from 7 to 14 days where you can work hand-in-hand with a partner Ministry at church and then locate the cost of the program depends on the location how long you'll be there but the typical cost for foreign locations is around $800 for 7 days not including plane tickets the total cost of my trip to Mexico for 8 days was about $1,200 the trip cost covers food lodging transportation cultural experience activities from European apply on the website set up a trading weekend for Preparation in Mexico we set for the kids in Marietta so I'm coming from the small mine Village nearby were they to learn about Christianity different locations and the kids from the local communities will come after school since they have school almost all year round we spend time telling Bible stories playing games and singing songs but not all trips are for evangelism purposes summer simply for just use Outreach in Sports Camps but we had translators it was much easier to connect with the kids because I was able to an idea what questions they're asking this trip is giving me a much more significant understanding communication and how to become a good teacher it was difficult to process information because the children talks very fast and had really thick accents this child's me to become a better listener in Spanish also is exposed to an entirely new culture to help me to understand them a few months prior to the trip I had a training weekend while I learn about the culture of the place I was going to and their Traditions also the training weekend prepared me with a material that I would be using to teach the kids in a fun interesting way to capture their attention and which way to go people on my team as able to even give my testimony in Spanish and it made the moment a lot more special because people can see the effort as really putting into it to connect with them more easily without a translator to get paid much more attention because lesson was a lot quicker and easier process also the people that my team stayed with us about the Mayan culture and we were able to visit villages Town squares and famous ruin such as Chichen Itza and I dish intermissions work although it's pretty expensive experiences are worth it especially sing the song on the kids faces interacting with them also had many opportunities for tourist activities in addition to our work with the kids in Mexico the mission team from Mexico that we partner with make sure we had safe housing and transportation everyday I'm not going to 11 so thankful to have been given multiple opportunities to travel experience other cultures through my school as well as my church each trip lasted no longer than 7-days the first trip that I was able to participate in Worcester my church at Cornerstone dentist the trip was to Santo Domingo Dominican Republic to do humanitarian work and cost about $1,400 that is sounds expensive but it was definitely worth every penny the work that I was able to participate in as well as our team was a roughly 27 people included making sandwiches lunch is the Fed Costa 500 kids each day we also offered a VBS for the people we were able to feed since this was a religious-based trip some of the boys on our team periodically throughout the week to fix a hole in the roof of a Widow's house I thought this trip was a fan I think experience for the store thing my next opportunity to travel was organized by the school through a program called outreach360 another similar similar humanitarian work trip that also include some sightseeing and educational value as well a lot of this trip was learning as well as teaching my Spanish really improved through this week ironically as I taught English to the kiddos in Monte Cristi Dominican Republic this trip was with a group of students and staff from the school and cost about $1,800 this trip was as controlling as my church this time I was able to talk to the logos which was the biggest part of my Spanish vocabulary expansion our team also have the opportunity to tour the area and learn the history of the island as well as a little town where we stayed my most recent trip was the cap haitien Haiti cost $1,500 this trip was through my church or refuge and I got to share my experience with both my brother and my dad a very similar guideline to the trip with Cornerstone with feeding about 500 kiddos and Grading VBS alongside the team of 25 people are team played a big and helping run soccer camps as a main task which is where we also feed the kids and coaches participating the start of the week we fed about 200 kids and word spread we fed over 500 on the last day we had competition in separating the two teams to see who could feed their line the fastest give me huge deal at the end of the week we had to collect and wash plates as the kids finished before we could hand out more food since we ran out of plates are VVS numbers increased as the week went on as well my nips on the Strip was mixing placement tiling floors this took place at it that is in the process of being fixed up to be used the two men in charge of the construction worked in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti which was perfect for me because this meant that they spoke Spanish as well I also became the babysitter the first granddaughter throughout the week which is a full-time job self through all these experiences I've definitely learned to wait until I have all the information before making conclusions I've also become a more open-minded and selfless person overseas traveling from here to humanitarian work has definitely a passion for me and I opener I'm also super thankful for all my International friendships I've created through these experiences which are now starting to broaden my opportunities to travel and make a bigger impact without the relationships I have with the people I have come into contact with in these places these trips wouldn't be near watch me as I do my name is Bailey Markovich and I'm a senior this year I've taken Spanish all through middle school and high school and I'm currently in AP Spanish 5 last summer I took a trip to Costa Rica through a global organization called rasp Pathways they offer many programs to more than 15 different countries and I chose Surf and service it was a total of 9 days including travel and after airfare and insurance it cost around $3,500 its not take much to reply all you needed to do was fill out a personal information in a secure online form put down a deposit and sign waivers this organization brings students together from around the world to work together and become friends over the week I did not know one person prior to this trip and I even travelled alone until the meeting point in Newark New Jersey I was very nervous traveling by myself and met so many people and places that I was unfamiliar once I found my group that had matching t-shirts very easy to make friends after arriving in Costa Rica and riding out to the rural area on the ocean where we were staying my new friends and I easily made ourselves at home and started with group bonding exercises led by for very diverse and exciting program leaders each day we started out with about 4 hours of community service with a different project each day I hope to lay ceramic tile for a family in need make a cement floor go to public restroom and clean over miles beach in Dominica after working and then eating lunch my group and I had surfing lessons given by our leaders it did not matter your experience level we all written some waves before the end of the trip in about the home cooked meals we received from Donna East where the music and humidity and laughter always in the air whether we were working or relaxing but I took so much more from this experience I really learned about to stainable living and what it means to take care of what you have whether that be little or much I took masonry scales from the local laborers who let us and I learned how enormous the footprint of Americans on the global environment can be the oceans have become the receptacle for more than just lost things I would know my group and I fell 5 black carpenter trash bag full of trash within an hour and a half my perspective about people greet to after this trip each Costa Rican that I had the chance to talk with was very relaxed no one stressed out yelder became upset about any if something broke they fixed it and if someone was late it was okay this is an aspect of someone else's culture and it's very different from our own it open my eyes to all of the little things that drive my day today when I'm here at home and how that is nowhere near same concept everywhere in the world I grew in wanting to see the lifestyles of countless cultures and I hope to have the opportunities in an after college my personal experience on this trip will vary from anyone else but it was one of the best weeks of my life matter what I will always encourage exploration and the ability to be aware of others and the differences that exist outside of your home taking the opportunity to travel learn through helping others and expanding your understanding of others is one of the best things possibly experience in high school even if you get pummeled by the waves of life and swept under you have to get back up and paddle as hard as you can otherwise you will never get out to the lineup for you of every opportunity in the world to take my word for it your personal awesome experiences are in for a complete makeover if you just put yourself out there hi guys my name is Meg Jones and I normally take me to participate in the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global and International Studies a lot of free time so some activities we enjoyed included trips to movie theaters museums and religious centers activities in Schenley Park games of capture-the-flag movie Nights Mario Kart tour ice cream socials in a talent show how to say game-changing experience that really help me decide what I want to do in life learning Arabic and Middle Eastern culture as well as the Dynamics within the International Community guided me into Choosing My Majors international relations and Middle Eastern studies as well as my lifetime passion of learning languages and help Father's Day diplomacy I made so many great friends and have one of the best Summers of my life with 59 other passionate students getting to attend the Governor's School such an amazing and life-changing experience for me I got to spend time with 59 credible Italian people from across the state while immersed in subjects I'm passionate about each and every aspect confirm my selection of international relations as my major as well as encourage me to Branch out and explore new education opportunities to continuous like Arabic I gained confidence in my ability to defend my beliefs inside in areas previously and familiar to me and friendships that won't be forgotten hola Angela Barrientos Collins and I am currently a senior at the high school I have taken on in Spanish high school and I am currently taking AP Spanish 5 my junior year senior teeth the Ruffner was offering the chance to travel to Dominican Republic with the upper-level Spanish students through outreach360 so I signed up the total class which included the need to get boarding and food weather on $1,800 I want this program for a week with the school but there's an opportunity to extend your stay if you want to you're on your own I went to a small town called Monte Cristi in Dominican Republic and this experience was truly life-changing we taught English in a local schools for students in grades K through 5 which require that we make lesson plans he's flexible and work with the student the children's needs and support them in trying to learn a different language we were not in the schools not in the schools we were getting accustomed to and involved in the community itself we played basketball went shopping in the stores at 8 at the local restaurants wants to beat and climbed a mountain to see an impeccable view but most importantly we talked to the locals heard there stories and even though most of us were not fluent in Spanish they understood that we were trying and that was most important my personal reflection from this program itself is that I know a lot more Spanish than I realized we still have a long way to before I can get there myself fluent this program helps me grow as a person because it forced me to go outside my comfort zone and stepped up to be a leader by conversing in a language that I'm not fluent in and yet I still have confidence in myself and it showed me that I want to help and programs like this for the rest of my life because although it may seem like I did not change a whole lot in one week it is filled for the next group coming in and then the next group and each week will help these students become fluent in English and that they have more opportunities in the future the proof is that I am in contact with some of these people now and some of these kids we went who went through this program are fluent English and are moving on to better things but what I found most interesting was that people who had a little sweat so little where the happiest people I've ever met when I look at people at home who have everything it the same people who continue to search their whole lives to find what makes them happy as a people in Monte Cristi my name is Julia Davis and I'm in 12th grade and I'm in a piece Spanish 5 the summer between my sophomore and junior year I participated in the short-term Exchange program to the Rotary Club for 3 weeks I live with my host family in Naples Italy and them for 3 weeks following my traps my whole sister stayed with my family and I and greens it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and he married of wise I got to be really independent for the first time because I travel completely by myself so that means I flew by myself and navigated the airport so loud additionally I found out that I had a more freedom in Italy this is although I stay with a host family so I grew very close with my horse is stiff Iran's and I really in charge of our own plans transportation and taking care of ourselves in general since both of my hoes parents worked bouncing around the city and meeting people was literally made the whole experience more than just a vacation my host parents made sure that I got to see the big ticket items to though like the Coliseum and Pompeii I never felt like a tourist while I was there but rather one of the one of the locals because way too close group of friends who I still talk to regularly and being treated being with the family and being treated as one of their own I really going to feel of what it was like to live in Naples and not just see it I learned a lot from this experience and got to see so many new and interesting I never would have on my own while I was still a mentally independent the program cost changes a little depending on the lake length of your program because you can stay for 2 to 4 weeks in the country of your choice and the country you choose however the in general it costs the general cost include price of overseas insurance and application which is about $215 your plane rides and spending money which averages about $2,000 and any additional cost for small things you might need like your passport the application process is also relatively lengthy but also very easy you have a member of the rotary guiding you to the whole process and you and your family will have to do an interview attending meetings and get background checks along with completing any company-paid paperwork that goes along with the process all these steps are Made Easy by the club's out and the members are very congenial and willing to assist you in any way that they can they have very relatively flexible schedules as well overall I would highly recommend this phone to anyone looking for a little Independence and an amazing experience it really helped to open my eyes and expand my horizons there are so many opportunities for students just like all of you to get involved in the global Community mission trip exchange programs in college classes are just a few of the many available Avenues each and every person you'd listen to would surely agree that their experiences are some things I'll never forget and always value and our society that is ever-changing and always expanding its not option to ignore what's happening around us languages and Global awareness will always lead somewhere new and exciting whether it's a mission trip or a lifelong career if you have
